How Food Can Help Your Eyes – Part 1

We all have heard that carrots are the best food for your eyes. Carrots and other orange vegetables and fruits provide a type of vitamin A called beta-carotene. Beta-carotene helps your eyes by enabling your retinas to operate smoothly. However, orange foods aren’t the only friends your eyes have – and thank goodness! Other types of food can help keep your eyes functioning at their best while adding variety to your diet.

Berries and Citrus

  • These delicious treats are well-known sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C protects your eyes from developing cataracts and macular degeneration. They offer antioxidants, which improve blood flow, defend against free radicals, and help with collagen synthesis. The best part is, you can easily incorporate them into your diet. Tomatoes are great on sandwiches. Oranges travel anywhere, grapefruit is amazing for breakfast, berries can be eaten alone or on cereal, and all of them are fantastic on salads. No matter how you eat them, you can have another helping because they are helping your eyes!

Eggs

  • Each egg yolk provides lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc. They help prevent macular degeneration, which occurs when the center (macula) of the retina begins to break down. Because it dominates our ability to see colors and details as well as read and drive, any problems with the macula profoundly affect daily life. By eating eggs that contain nutrients that protect your macula, you will ensure you see clearly for years to come … and you don’t have to eat only carrots!
